Margarita and Luis Sosa Calvo created this vibrant, hand-carved Alebrije in the heart of Oaxaca, Mexico, during the late 20th century. These famous artisans from San Martín Tilcajete became known for their meticulous “pointillism” technique, which involves applying thousands of tiny, hand-painted dots to create complex geometric patterns. During this era, Oaxacan wood carving shifted from simple rustic toys to intricate, world-class folk art that captured the imagination of international collectors. Therefore, this howling coyote reflects the peak of the Zapotec artistic tradition with its characteristic fusion of nature and myth. Many collectors love the Sosa Calvo family’s designs for their ability to transform a solid block of copal wood into a dynamic, storytelling piece of art.

This sculpture features the sought-after “Howling Coyote” (or Fox) motif, offering a poetic and energetic look at a creature synonymous with Mexican folklore. The electric blue and sunset orange patterns contrast beautifully with the deep red base, highlighting the animal’s arched back and uplifted head. These organic, swirling motifs give the piece a dreamlike, decorative appearance that feels both vintage and timeless. Because of the stable, four-point stance and the elegantly curved tail, the sculpture can be easily displayed, allowing it to serve as a colorful focal point on a bookshelf or mantelpiece.

The proportions of this model feel balanced and spirited, measuring 19 cm in height and 18 cm in width. You can use it as a standalone statement piece in a modern living room or a creative studio. However, it also works beautifully as part of a larger collection of global folk art or “Curiosities” displayed on a sideboard.
