Add a touch of architectural elegance to your interior with this exceptional piece of Mid-Century Modern Conical studio pottery vase. This vase originates from a European atelier, likely a high-end Dutch or German workshop. During the golden era of ceramics in the 1960’s/70’s, independent potters moved away from industrial uniformity to explore bold geometric shapes and sophisticated glaze chemistry. This particular example is a testament to that movement, balancing a sharp, modernist silhouette with an organic, tactile finish.

Craftsmanship & Design
The conical vase is defined by its striking geometric silhouette: a broad, substantial conical base that tapers dramatically into a stout, cylindrical neck. This “squat” proportions give the piece a powerful physical presence and a low center of gravity, typical of the minimalist functionalism found in 1960s design.

The true artistry, however, lies in the multi-layered glazing process. The potter applied a rich palette of earthy tones, featuring a prominent band of deep, mottled burgundy-red that encircles the center of the body. This vibrant core is framed by soft olive-green and muted cream tones at the neck and base. To finish the piece, a deliberate and fine craquelé (crackle) glaze was applied. This technique creates a web of delicate lines across the surface, giving the glossy finish a timeless, weathered texture that catches the light from every angle.

The underside reveals a clean, unglazed terracotta-colored ring. The quality of the clay and the precision of the form point toward the tradition of renowned studios, where the focus remained on the harmony between clay and fire rather than prominent branding.

Versatility & Styling
Because of its balanced yet bold proportions, this conical vase is highly versatile. Measuring 20 cm in height with a wide 21 cm body and a 9 cm opening, it is perfectly suited for large, structured floral arrangements. Alternatively, its sculptural quality allows it to function beautifully as a standalone “objet d’art” on a sideboard or mantle. Its earthy palette and clean lines make it a seamless addition to Japandi, Modernist, or Bohemian interiors.

Collector’s Note

This conical vase embodies the transition from mid-century decorative arts to modern sculptural pottery. Collectors of this era value such pieces for their “unique-state” qualities; the way the burgundy glaze melts into the olive tones is a result of the specific atmosphere within the kiln, meaning no two examples are identical. It represents a period where European potters celebrated the unpredictability of the craft, resulting in a piece that is as much a work of art as it is a functional vessel.
