This exquisite wooden box is a prime example of Hindeloopen art (Hindelooper schilderkunst), a traditional Dutch folk art dating back to the 17th century from the Frisian town of Hindeloopen. This specific piece, dated 1993 and signed with the initials SBK, continues the legacy of using rich “oxblood” red backgrounds adorned with colorful, stylized flowers and birds. The art style was originally influenced by the floral fabrics (Chintz) imported by the Dutch East India Company (VOC), which local artists then translated onto wooden furniture and household objects.

Artistic Details

The box features a sliding lid decorated with a central bird motif surrounded by lush roses and tulips in shades of ochre, cream, and blue. The sides are equally ornate, displaying “garland” style paintings with delicate bows and hanging floral clusters. What makes this piece unique is its vertical orientation and the integrated handle at the top, suggesting it may have been designed as a decorative standing storage chest for small keepsakes. The vibrant folk-style brushwork brings a warm, rustic charm to any interior, bridging the gap between historical craft and cozy home styling.
