This Cabbage Leaf salad bowl is a refined example of mid-to-late 20th-century Studio Majolica. While the iconic cabbage leaf design is deeply rooted in the traditions of Caldas da Rainha (Portugal) and the workshops of Bassano (Italy), this specific piece distinguishes itself through its remarkably airy, luminous palette. Unlike the dense, forest-green glazes of mass-produced equivalents, this bowl features a vibrant, translucent Apple green glaze. This lighter touch allows the intricate botanical details, the delicate radial veins and the ruffled, life-like margins of the Brassica leaf to remain the focal point, creating a piece that feels both organic and modern.

The bowl’s construction reflects an artisanal “trompe-l’oeil” approach, where the clay has been meticulously pressed into a mold derived from actual vegetation. The result is a highly tactile surface that invites touch. The exterior is as detailed as the interior, showcasing the structural ribs of the leaf, while the base reveals the authentic marks of the potter’s wheel and the hand-finishing process. The soft, undulating rim and the slightly asymmetrical form confirm its status as a piece of individual studio pottery rather than a standardized factory product.

Measuring 29 cm by 26 cm with a height of 8.5 cm, its generous proportions make it a commanding centerpiece. Whether used to serve a crisp summer salad or displayed as a sculptural object on a minimalist teak sideboard, the bowl bridges the gap between traditional 19th-century barbotine and contemporary organic design. The luminous glaze interacts beautifully with natural light, highlighting the depth and “movement” within the ceramic relief.
