This handcrafted stoneware pitcher is a quintessential example of Danish Studio Pottery, originating from the Ulla Keramik workshop in the picturesque fishing village of Bagenkop on the island of Langeland. Since the mid-20th century, Langeland has been a fertile ground for independent ceramicists who sought to bridge the gap between rugged, functional stoneware and delicate artistic expression. Ulla Pedersen (often referred to as Ulla Bagenkop) became a central figure in this movement, known for her ability to capture the soul of the Danish archipelago in her work. Consequently, this piece serves as a beautiful representation of “Stentøj” (stoneware) tradition, making it a soulful addition for collectors of authentic Nordic craft.

The pitcher is defined by its robust, tactile construction, featuring a high-fired stoneware body with a natural, speckled “chamotte” texture that feels grounded and organic. The focal point is Ulla’s signature hand-painted motif: a stylized floral arrangement in deep cobalt blue, reminiscent of the wild alliums or dandelions found along the Langeland coastline. This “dotted” decoration technique, paired with the hand-glazed cobalt rim and the elegantly swept handle, provides a striking visual contrast to the earthy, sandy tones of the clay. When held, the pitcher reveals the subtle throwing rings of the potter’s wheel, a hallmark of its slow, artisanal creation process.

Standing at 14.5 cm in height with a generous 17 cm diameter, this pitcher is perfectly scaled for both functional use, serving water, milk, or juice, and as a standalone decorative vessel for a wildflower bouquet. Its heavy, stable base and ergonomic handle ensure a comfortable pour, while its rustic aesthetic allows it to anchor a minimalist oak dining table or a Mid-Century sideboard with ease. To maintain the integrity of the hand-painted cobalt glaze, hand-washing is recommended.
